Time Magazine Slams the US Marine Corps
Time Magazine’s cover this week substituted a tree for the US flag that flew over Iwo Jima’s Mount Suribachi. This cover butchers Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal's 1945 Pulitzer award winning photo.
The actual Pacific battle was the first one held on Japanese soil. Over 20,703 Japanese defenders died with only 214 survivors. American casualties included 6,821 dead, 19,189 wounded and 494 missing in action.
It was a crucial World War Two battle for both the United States and the Empire of Japan in February of 1945.
The heart and soul of the US Marines was shed in blood on this tiny volcanic island and Rosenthal’s photo has evolved to represent all the serviceman and servicewomen who served in the Pacific theater.
Time chose to trivialize this bloody battle with a cover comparing the Pacific War sacrifices to that of the environmental efforts needed to tame global warming. This is NOT the photograph the editors should have chosen.
As a retired US Army Infantry reservist, I am saddened to see the US Marine Corps treated as a cheap cartoon in a major newsmagazine.
